THE HISTORY OF
SILVER BIRCHES

Formative Years

Lake Wallenpaupack’s creation in 1926 transformed the region, prompting George and Rachel Singer to open a 14-room inn to accommodate incoming tourists. Around the same time, the Hawley Chamber of Commerce built a hotel that later became The Settlers Inn.

New Ownership & Advancement

In 1943, Rachel’s sister Marjorie Ehrhardt and her husband George took over the inn, expanding it into a thriving resort. Their son Jerry and his wife Alice continued the growth, adding more lodging and cottages. By the 1980s, their sons—Eric, Steve, and Craig—returned to help run the business, ushering in another wave of expansion, including the opening of Ehrhardt’s Lakeside Restaurant and The Waterfront Banquet Center for weddings and events.

Now in the Present

After 72 years of family ownership, the Ehrhardts sold the resort in 2015 to the Genzlingers, another well-known local family with roots in hospitality, who restored its original name, Silver Birches. They undertook extensive renovations in 2016, preserving its historic charm while modernizing the accommodations and restaurant, now called The Dock on Wallenpaupack. In 2022, The Waterfront event space was updated, and an adults-only lakeside pool was added, ensuring Silver Birches remains a beloved destination.
